Technical Architect / Consultant (Middleware)

We are looking for a proven Technical Architect / Consultant to work on the Durham History Centre’s digital transformation project. The requirement will involve understanding how middleware is used to integrate the collections data to provide an innovative and interactive search environment. Responsibilities will include researching knowledge integration systems and ‘middleware’ solutions for heritage collections, assisting with documentation, reviewing existing digital strategy, and writing a fully costed digital implementation plan covering searchable integrated collections.
 
This is a contract role for initially 2 months, paying a fixed fee of £13,200 including all expenses (approximately £300 per day if you work full time). This will require a face to face start-up meeting and then the consultant will work remotely (catch-ups with Teams), plus visiting people in different locations across the county from time to time. Please note, this is an urgent requirement with a deadline of Thursday, 26th March at midnight.
 
The successful candidate will need to provide an example to demonstrate the following experience:
 
Essential
  • Have an understanding and experience of different middleware architectures
  • Provide an agile multi-disciplinary team including research, system architecture and product development
  • Have worked in a project that encountered large scale databases holding large quantities of data that are often duplicated or are difficult to match
  • Experience of working with large scale databases where data is difficult to match that resides in both bespoke and bought in solutions
  • Understand the importance of high quality structured meta data and how it can be applied to this project
  • Have knowledge of the requirements of the customers that may potentially use this service in the future that includes customers with low digital literacy
  • To recommend a solution that's in line with the Government service standards and technology code of practice
  • Have the ability to work with internal ICT teams to understand the architecture of our current systems
  • Evidence of delivering projects on time
  • Awareness of best practice in the digital environment and of future trends
  • Previous experience of writing and costing implementation plans for projects of a similar size and nature
  • Experience working with at least one of the following: archives, museums and historic environment records; the structure of culture/heritage data is unique and its complexity is often underestimated
 
Nice to have
  • Have worked on a similar projects with other Councils or cultural organisations
  • Have experience of creating middleware solutions with museum collections data
  • Previous experience of working on National Lottery Heritage Fund development phase bids
  • Have experience of working on agile projects and understand agile project management
  • Have developed a working solution for people with a low digital literacy
  • Have experience of working with crowd sourcing solutions
  • A good working knowledge of government procurement processes ensuring documentation and guidance provided fits seamlessly into next stages of our procurement process regarding soft market testing and ITT
